Carers often face social, professional, health and financial challenges that prevent them from reaching their full potential.<\/p>\n<p>In Greece the number of carers is estimated at 3.500.000<\/p>\n<p>To meet the needs of informal carers, we need to take steps towards carer-friendly societies across Europe. To do this, Eurocarers has developed a <a href=\"https:\/\/eurocarers.org\/strategy\/\">10-step strategy<\/a> to help policy makers and other stakeholders in Europe who can help improve the lives of carers.<\/p>\n<p>The 10 steps towards carer-friendly societies across Europe include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Step 1<\/strong>: Define and acknowledge Carers<\/li>\n<li><strong>Step 2<\/strong>: Identify your Carers<\/li>\n<li><strong>Step 3<\/strong>: Assess the needs of your Carers<\/li>\n<li><strong>Step 4<\/strong>: Support multisectoral partnerships for integrated and community-based care services<\/li>\n<li><strong>Step 5<\/strong>: Facilitate Carers\u2019 access to information and advice about care, caring and care-life balance<\/li>\n<li><strong>Step 6<\/strong>: Pay attention to Carers\u2019 health and prevent negative health outcomes<\/li>\n<li><strong>Step 7<\/strong>: Give Carers a break<\/li>\n<li><strong>Step 8<\/strong>: Provide Carers with access to training and recognise their skills<\/li>\n<li><strong>Step 9<\/strong>: Prevent Carers\u2019 poverty and allow them to maintain an active professional\/educational life<\/li>\n<li><strong>Step 10<\/strong>: Adopt the Carers\u2019 perspective in all relevant policies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is very important to implement the European Directive on Carers in Greece, enacted in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile some progress has been made, it is not enough or happening fast enough to ensure informal carers are fully supported across healthcare systems and social structures\u201d said Stecy Yghemonos, Executive Director of Eurocarers. \u201cAt a time of global epidemic, raising awareness of the needs of informal carers is more important than ever to recognize their central role to the health and long term care systems, speed up consistent progress across countries and regions in Europe and protect carers\u2019 health and well-being.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Join the online conversation on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CarersDay\">Twitter<\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/europeancarersday\/\">Facebook<\/a>using the hashtag #CarersDay_EU and #WeAreCarers_EU.<\/p>\n<p>For more information about European Carers Day, please visit, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carersday.eu\">www.carersday.eu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About EPIONI<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Greek Carers Network EPIONI is a national non-profit organization established in 2016 by a group<\/p>\n<p>of citizens who are caregivers or former caregivers.
