The 7th event “Caring for Caregivers” by the Greek Carers Network Epioni was successfully held on Friday 16.06.2023 at the Metropolitan College, 42, Akadimias Street, Athens.
The workshop focused on family caregivers. The event was held under the auspices of the Region of Attica, the Hellenic Psychiatric Association, the Hellenic Brain Council and was supported by Eurocarers and EUFAMI.
The event was sponsored by VIANEX SA and the Saronic Nephrological Centre.
The event was welcomed by the MEP Mr. Stelios Kympouropoulos, the Governor of Attica Mr. Giorgos Patoulis, the Secretary General for Social Solidarity and Poverty Alleviation of the Ministry of Labour & Social Affairs Ms. Eleni A. Gioti, the President of EUFAMI Mr. Urs Würsch and the representative of the Metropolitan College Mr. Robert Pefanis.
Notable Greek and foreign speakers spoke at the conference. In particular, Mr. Stecy Yghemonos, Executive Director of Eurocarers, spoke about the European strategy for care. Psychiatrist Ms Stella Stathoulopoulou spoke about empowering carers. Dr. Kelly Panagiotopoulou, allergist and psychotherapist, spoke about the therapeutic contribution of the family of sufferers and Dr. Menelaos Theodoroulakis, president of PEPSAEE and the Argo network, presented the current course of psychiatric reform in Greece. Ms Liuska Sanna, Active Director of Mental Health Europe, spoke about the EU initiative on mental health. Dr Dimitris Kontis, psychiatrist, spoke about the role of public psychiatric services in the Greek psychiatric reform. Professor Nikolaos Drossos presented the Prospect project and photojournalist Ms Maro Kouri spoke about treatment through photography.
Finally, speeches were given on human rights in psychiatry and dealing with the stigma of mental illness by psychiatrist Dr Georgios Tzeferakos and Professor of Psychiatry Ms Sladjana Ivezic respectively.
